The Namesake is a novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri. Published in 2003, it tells the story of Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli's life in both India and America, as the family copes with cultural conflicts between their two worlds. Ashoke is an Indian man who comes to New York City to study engineering at Columbia University on a government scholarship. There he meets one of his classmates - Edna Fernandes - with whom he falls in love and eventually marries. He also becomes close friends with another classmate Gogol Bordello, who loves Russian literature, especially Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Ashoke and Edna have a son - Gogol - who is named after the Russian writer. The novel follows the family as they struggle to reconcile Indian traditions with American culture. In a 2004 review for The New York Times, Michiko Kakutani wrote: "Ms. Lahiri writes about her characters' sense of dislocation and lostness in such a vivid and affecting way that their story becomes our story as well, whether we're Indian-Americans or not". In 2005, Richard Eder of The New York Times wrote: "The Namesake sends the reader swiftly through its pages to end up somewhere good and unsettling. This novel is one of the best around". The following are the awards won by the book: This book has also been adapted into a movie The Namesake. It was directed by Mira Nair and stars Ben Kingsley, Hope Davis, Gopi Desai, Tabu and Penn Badgley. It was distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures in the United States (the film had an international release). The film does not include Ashima's story. As opposed to the book, her life is told separately in this film, though she is still significant to the plot. The title of this adaptation comes from the name "Ashima" meaning "memory".
